1. Where can I find out more about Eudora 3.x?

More information can be found at: <URL:http://www.eudora.com/>

What do I need to run 3.x?

In order to run 3.x, you need System 7 and a MacPlus or greater. Eudora 3.1.x will work well under MacOS 8.x

2. What are some suggestions for installing 3.x?

As with any software, I recommend disabling extensions before installing (restart and hold down the Shift key) and rebuilding your desktop after installing (use TechTool or restart while holding down the Command and Option keys). I also HIGHLY recommend backing up your Settings, Filters, and Nicknames files before installing. Backing up your mailboxes would not be a bad idea, either. For best results, move your Eudora Settings file AND YOUR PLUG-INS out of your Eudora folder entirely and start with new settings when you first run Eudora 3.x. Move your Plug-ins back in one at a time to insure that they still work with the new version of Eudora.

3. Where are "Nicknames"?

"Nicknames" has been renamed "Address Book" and moved to the "Special" menu.

4. Where is "Compact Mailboxes"?

"Compact Mailboxes" has been removed from the "Special" menu because it was under-utilized and to make room for other options on smaller screens. To compact a single mailbox, Command-Click on the bottom left corner of the mailbox (where the number/size information is). To compact all mailboxes, Option-Command-Click in the same place.

5. Where is "Ph"?

"Ph" has been renamed "Directory Services" and moved to the "Special" menu.

6. How do I send people an email without everyone seeing who got it?

To send to multiple addresses without everyone getting a list of who it is to, put the list of addresses (or nicknames) in the "Bcc:" field.

You can also create a nickname containing many addresses or other nicknames, being sure to put something in the "Name" field of the nickname. The "Name" field is distinct from the "Nickname" name (the "Name" field appears right below the nickname name in the Address Book, in the upper right).

The simply put the Nickname in the To: field of the email. If you call your Nickname "Opera" and fill in the name as "Opera Fans", then the recipients will simply see To: Opera Fans:; They will not see the email addresses that the message was sent to.

If you get confused, just put the nickname in the Bcc: field.

7. How do I turn off the toolbar?

One of the most frequent criticisms of 3.x is the ugly toolbar (although a few people have professed to liking it). "Special:Settings:Toolbar" is the place to turn the toolbar on and off, as well as to change its appearance.

8. Why are a lot of the keyboard shortcuts changed?

Apple's User Interface Guidlelines recommend that certain keyboard shortcuts do the same thing in every program. Examples are "CMD-S" to save, "CMD-B" for bold, and "CMD-I" for italics. Changes have been made in 3.0 to keep with these recommendations.

9. What kind of Plug-Ins are there for 3.x?

Eudora 3.0 (Light and Pro), added support for more types of plug-ins. The old resource plug-ins are still around, and now Eudora is capable of using "Message Plug-Ins", which are EMSAPI plug-ins. EMSAPI are mainly used to change the actual messages. EMSAPI plug-ins can translate messages between different lanuages and can be used for encryption software. Eudora v3.1 adds even greater eupport for EMSAPI modules. More information about different plug-ins can be found at http://www.eudora.com/developers/emsapi/

10. What Plug-Ins still work with 3.x?

Most plug-ins that I have seen and heard about still work with 3.x. Some exceptions include the one that gives the keyboard shorcut of Command-/ to Eudora's Settings.

11. My long messages are still being cut off! Why?

One of the most possible reasons is that you used a plug-in to change where Eudora Pro split messages in the past. This cut-off remained, even if you are not using the Plug-In anymore. Trash your Settings file and enter all of the settings again.

12. What are some of the keyboard shortcuts and what do they do?

A more complete listing of Eudora keyboard shortcuts can be found under the Help menu ("Help:Shortcuts")

13. Why, Eudora Light 3.1, can't you set Eudora up to automatically sort by subject on download, while you could in 3.0?

Gary Nash gnash@qualcomm.com writes:

This feature was dropped from Mac Eudora Light 3.1 to match the feature set of our Windows product. Sorry.

14. How do I use Eudora as the mailto: helper in Netscape 4.0.x?

For the standalone version of Netscape 4.0.x (Netscape Navigator 4.0x), you simply need InternetConfig. Set up Eudora as the mailto: helper in InternetConfig and then set Netscape to use Internet Config ("Edit:Preferences:Identity" and check "Use Internet Config")

For more information, see <URL:http://www.emailman.com/eudora/eudorans.html>

15. "I am having problems with typing and Eudora 3.x and..."

A lot of people have had problems with "sluggish typing" and Eudora. Symptoms include Eudora inserting characters as slow as 1 per second, and eventually dropping characters altogether.

The issue of disappearing text is a different problem. Versions after 3.0.2b7 should fix the duplicate text problem.

It has been suggested that you try (in order):

A lot of problems have been traced back to INIT problems, so try finding a specific conflict with them. If restarting with extensions off (Shift-Start Up) eliminates the problem, try narrowing down the conflict to a specific extension by removing one at a time and seeing if you can find the exact extension that causes the slow-down. Post to comp.mail.eudora.mac for more help on doing this. If you have a reproducable problem and are using the most recent version of Eudora, send it to Qualcomm.

Update: A few people have reported sucess at eliminating the slow typing bug by deleting the Eudora Settings files (original and Eudora Settings.bkup and re-entering all their settings. If this fix works for you, please post the results to the newsgroup.

16. "I have lost all of my color icons in Eudora. How do I fix it?"

You simply need to put the Eudora Help file ("Eudora Pro Help" in Pro, I assume "Eudora Light Help" in Light) into the same directory as your Eudora application (if Eudora is in the "Internet Apps Folder", your Eudora Help file needs to be in that folder, no matter how deep).

17. "Help! 'New Message To' has nicknames that are not in my Address Book!"

A lot of people have written in complaining that, upon upgrade, their recipient list (the names that appear in the "Message:New Message To" menu) contains names that are not in the Address Book. There are several ways to fix this problem:

18. "I have lost all of my nicknames in my Address Book!"

There was a bug in Eudora 3.0 (both Pro and Light) prior to 3.0.2b7 that caused some people's Address Books to be hosed. Update to this version (or more recent) and restore your Address Book from a back-up.

19. "I keep getting an error saying 'Translator initialization failed; consult translator documentation. {-2804.0}'!"

Congratulations! You have the PGP package partially installed. Delete everything PGP-related and either do not install again or reinstall from scratch.

20. Why won't Eudora work with Netscape's "Send Page" command?

Netscape currently sends the entire web page through the MacOS internal messaging system, AppleEvents. AppleEvents have a very small size limitation. Most web pages are larger than this size limit and therefore MacOS and Eudora choke on the page. This is not the fault of Eudora but rather with Netscape. There are other ways for Netscape to send the page.

You can try downloading Eudora Mailto Helper and using that as your mailto: helper. More information can be found at <URL:http://www.emailman.com/eudora/eudorans.html> and <URL:http://weber.u.washington.edu/~loren/bin/sendpage.html>.

21. What to do when Eudora stops opening Netscape/IE when you click on a URL.

Option-Command-Click on a URL and re-select your helper application.

22. What about InternetConfig support?

Look in "Special:Settings:Miscellaneous". InternetConfig is not officially supported, however, and Qualcomm has made it clear that they take no responsibility if you use InternetConfig. If you do, make sure that your POP account information is correct in InternetConfig. I would suggest checking "Write to Internet Config", and then quit and restart Eudora before checking "Read from InternetConfig" to allow settings to be saved in InternetConfig first.

23. What about WorldScript?

Full WorldScript support did not make it into the Eudora Pro 3.0/3.1/4.0/4.1 releases. Eudora's text engine currently supports WorldScript, but Eudora is currently unable to encode these messages into the correct MIME formats. Some other parts of Eudora Pro 3.x, such as Find, are also currently not able to work with WorldScript.
